Reap the Benefits of a Good-impressed
Consciousness
Ernest Holmes, the founder of Religious Science and the author of The
Science of Mind, teaches that consciousness operates on both an individual
and a collective level. Individual consciousness refers to a person’s personal
awareness, beliefs, and thoughts, which shape their experiences and reality.
Each individual has the power to direct their thinking and, through spiritual
principles such as the Law of Attraction, manifest outcomes based on their
dominant mental patterns. However, individuals do not exist in isolation; their
consciousness is influenced by the collective consciousness, which consists of
the shared beliefs, thoughts, and energy of groups, societies, and humanity as
a whole. This larger field of thought shapes the mental environment in which
individuals live and think.
Collective consciousness has a profound impact on individual consciousness because it creates a framework of ideas, traditions, and social norms that influence how people perceive reality. Holmes teaches that we are surrounded by a universal creative intelligence that responds to thought, whether on an individual or collective level. If a society holds widespread beliefs in limitation, fear, or lack, individuals growing up in that society may unconsciously absorb those ideas, making them part of their own thinking.
For example, if a culture collectively believes in economic hardship and scarcity, individuals within that culture may struggle to believe in their own ability to prosper, even if they have the talent and opportunities to succeed. Their personal consciousness is shaped by the larger field of thought around them.
However, Holmes also emphasizes that individuals can rise above limiting collective beliefs by consciously choosing new thoughts and aligning with spiritual truth. Just as negative collective beliefs can impact the individual, positive collective consciousness—such as movements of peace, prosperity, or scientific advancement—can uplift and inspire personal transformation. For instance, during the Civil Rights Movement, the collective consciousness of equality and justice influenced many individuals to challenge old, limiting beliefs about race and human rights. By understanding the relationship between individual and collective consciousness, Holmes teaches that people can consciously align with higher truth and create change in their individual consciousness. This is where the practice of daily affirmations, and sitting in the stillness, meditation, and silent prayer, benefit the individual.
Keep the faith!
