Deeper Spiritual Work

A Monthly exploration in spiritual awareness: October 1, 2026

Religion may inspire us, comfort us, and offer meaningful traditions, but religion cannot think for us. It cannot replace fear with faith, resentment with peace, or limitation with possibility unless we ourselves participate in that transformation. Ernest Holmes taught that life responds to consciousness, not merely to words, rituals, or outward professions of belief. We can pray endlessly for circumstances to change, but if our inner conversation remains dominated by fear, defeat, anger, or lack, we continue carrying the same consciousness into every new situation. Deeper spiritual work is not persuading an outside power to rescue us; it is changing the state of mind through which we meet life.

Ralph Waldo Emerson challenged people to stop surrendering their spiritual authority to institutions and to trust the wisdom within themselves. His words, “Nothing can bring you peace but yourself,” are especially powerful because they place responsibility where it belongs. Peace is not something another person can permanently give us. Neither is confidence, courage, prosperity consciousness, or self-respect. Others may point the way, but we must walk it. Emerson’s self-reliance was not selfishness; it was the recognition that there is an intelligence within us that must be trusted, developed, and expressed.

Holmes took this idea even further by teaching that thought is creative and that our dominant mental patterns help shape the experiences we attract, notice, accept, and act upon. This does not mean that every hardship is caused by a negative thought, nor does it mean we should deny pain or pretend problems are unreal. It means that we possess tremendous power in deciding what a problem will mean to us and what we will do next. If we constantly rehearse what is wrong, what we fear, and what we believe cannot happen, we imprison ourselves mentally before circumstances have even had the final word. But when we deliberately focus upon possibility, strength, abundance, wisdom, love, and expected good, the mind begins looking for doors instead of walls.

The great spiritual awakening comes when we stop waiting for religion, another person, or some distant supernatural intervention to do what consciousness must do within us. Books can teach us. Ministers can encourage us. Spiritual traditions can remind us of timeless truths. But ultimately, you are the thinker in your own mind. You decide which ideas receive your attention, and which fears you refuse to feed. Emerson called it self-reliance. Holmes called it the creative power of thought. Whatever name we give it, the principle is the same: change the consciousness, and you change the way you meet life. The power is not in waiting for something outside you to become different. Power begins when something within you does.

Keep the faith!
